Toro Declares Independence From Spain, Goes Pan-Asian

Spanish-Asian tapas spot Toro opened a few years ago, but never really filled the airy former bank building it was located in, so owners Tom Tao and Marcelo Pevida (with the help of new management) redesigned the place as a flashy Pan-Asian restaurant with a lofted, glassed-in dining lounge and a third-floor party space. John Lin, formerly of Bamboo, is now in the kitchen turning out entrées such as a Dijon-soy-glazed chicken breast with mashed potatoes and red-wine cranberry sauce. His Two of Beef special pairs a grilled filet mignon with a sake-braised short ribs. Meanwhile, at the sushi bar, Wing Lee, formerly of Cru, turns out a dizzying variety of rolls. There's also a long list of sweet, flower-garnished cocktails at the two bars, but assuming you’re in Dumbo during the day, the real lure here may be the three-course lunch special: a soup, appetizer, and entrée for $10 to $14. There’s delivery to the 11201 Zip Code, but know that if you call in, you’re missing the two-story waterfall.

Let’s do luncheon

Toro, the formerly Spanish–Asian fusion restaurant inside the white Italianate building on DUMBO’s edge, is back in business - losing its Latin flavor and adding an awesome lunch deal.

For years, I’ve wanted to peek inside the stunning 1865 structure (pictured, below) — just to see if the former bank’s interior matched the exterior’s good looks. So I was excited to finally step inside on Tuesday night, a day before the grand re-opening, for a tour and tasting of its new, simply Asian-fusion menu.
